Josh Pyke

Great music is apparently brewing down under. Here’s the latest catch; a deviously talented singer/songwriter called Josh Pyke. It took about 30 seconds to realize that this guy is awesome, another minute to realize that his lyrics were much better than pop usually has to offer and then it was just a matter of kicking back and finding out how many good songs he had. The answer: plenty. Lines On Palms is the way pop sounds like when it’s not desperate to grab your attention (fresh, catchy and smart). The Summer should convince you that Josh is also a gifted wordsmith. And luckily for us, both songs have creative music videos so that’s always a welcome bonus! Ready for a double dose of Aussie magic?

Lines On Palms

Lyrics

Sometimes I know I become
All that’s weak in a man, and weak in a boy.
But I keep trying and I won’t quit,
And that must be worth something more
Than a strong man who believes
That there’s nothing left to try for.

And I can be cold, I know, I know
But a woman is a warm breath on the back of your neck
And a warm belly pressed against yours.

We need to feel the sum of all our parts
Are more than what’s laid out in lines upon our palms.
Although our hands aren’t tied, we move as though they are.

There’s one house in every town that everyone fears
And everyone steers clear.
And I don’t wanna live like that,
I’d rather live somewhere more like you.
By the sea, where the cliffs keep sentry,
Watching over me.

And it can get rough out there I know,
But a woman is a sail that remains unfurled,
So stay ahead of the wind man, or you won’t catch her.

We need to feel the sum of all our parts
Are more than what’s laid out in lines upon our palms.
Although our hands aren’t tied, we move as though they are,
Until we’re bound by branching out.

Sometimes I know where I am,
And what I’m doing, and what things might become.
But that always seems such a fleeting state,
For the remainder of the time I feel like I am a babe in the woods, howling for deliverance.
And I can be cold, I know, I know,
But a woman is a warm breath on the back of your neck
And a warm belly pressed against yours.

The Summer

Lyrics

If I could bottle up the sea breeze I would take it over to your house
And pour it loose through your garden
So the hinges on your windows would rust and colour
Like the boats pulled up on the sand for the summer
And your sweet clean clothes would go stiff on the line
And there’d be sand in your pockets and nothing on your mind

But every year it gets a little bit harder
To get back to that feeling of when we were fifteen
And we could jump in the river upstream
And let the current carry us to the beginning where
The river met the sea again
And all our days were a sun-drenched haze
While the salt spray crusted on the window panes

We should be living like we lived that summer
I wanna live like we lived in the summer

And I’ll remember that summer as the right one
The storms made the pavement steam like a kettle
And our first goodbye always seemed like hours
In the car park in between my house and yours
And if the summer holds a song we might sing forever
Then the winter holds a bite we’d never felt before

But time is like the ocean
You can only hold a little in your hands
So we swim before we’re broken
Before our bones become
Black coral on the sand
