Milford Lake

Milford Lake was released in a special tribute album to Hedwig And The Angry Inch back in 2003. Very few people (including devoted Hedwig fans) know about this song’s existence because it only appeared in this compilation. How often to you come across a song that begins with a brilliant line such as “I used to live in a town underneath Milford Lake” and then only gets better? Check out this great song (plus two bonus songs from HATAI):

Lyrics

I used to live in a town underneath Milford Lake.

You can throw a rock from here,

You might hit my house,

If you try

Who would know?

I don’t mind.

There used to be a road,

I suppose there might still be

For a crab, or a fish

It ran from my reflection way over near that boat

To her house, every night, every night.

Wasted all the time,

Waited for no one,

Don’t be so cautious

Water washes away many things,

But I can’t come clean

No, I can’t come clean,

I can’t come clean.

The flood was two weeks’ rising in 1869.

The buffalo all drowned and floated in the trees.

In the flood of ’51, eight boxcars overturned,

And the people washed away.

And the Mexican day-workers

Pulled the reefer from their yards

And ran for higher ground.

Someone wrapped a baby in a shirt

And hung him crying, crying from a tree.

There used to be a lot of floods before they built this dam.

Wasted all the time,

Waited for no one,

Don’t be so cautious

Water washes away many things,

But I can’t come clean

No, I can’t come clean.

We’re gonna drown.

I used to live in a town underneath Milford Lake.

Waiting in the spillway stream

Things small enough to make it through.

Floating on a wave of your hand,

But they’re far between and few.

I’m looking for an artifact of the things I left behind.

Piece of you, piece of me,

Too worn down to recognize.

Wasted all the time…

Lyrics

You know the sun is in your eyes
And hurricanes and rains
And black and cloudy skies

You’re running up and down that hill
You turn it on and off at will
There’s nothing here to thrill or bring you down

And if you’ve got no other choice
You know you can follow my voice
Through the dark turns and noise of this wicked little town

Oh lady, luck has led you here
And they’re so twisted up
They’ll twist you up, I fear

The pious, hateful and devout
You’re turning tricks ’til you’re turned out
The wind so cold, it burns, you’re burning out and blowing round

And if you’ve got no other choice
You know you can follow my voice
Through the dark turns and noise of this wicked little town

The fates are vicious and they’re cruel
You learn too late you’ve used two wishes
Like a fool

And then you’re someone you are not
And Junction City ain’t the spot
Remember Mrs. Lot and when she turned around

And if you’ve got no other choice
You know you can follow my voice
Through the dark turns and noise of this wicked little town

The Long Grift

Lyrics

Look what you’ve done
You gigolo
You know that I
Loved ya hon
And I didn’t wanna know
That your cool, seductive serenade
Was a tool of your trade
You gigolo

Of all the riches
You’ve surveyed
And all that you can lift
I’m just another dollar
That you made in your long long grift

Look what you’ve done, you gigolo
Another hustle has been run
But now you oughta know
That this fool can no longer be swayed
By the tools of your trade
You gigolo

I’m just another John you gypped
Another sucker stiffed
A walk on role in the script
To your long long grift

The love that held me in your grip
Was just a long long grift
